Debate and the Circus of Political Theatrics

Debates, in their modern context, are nothing more than a pissing contest. One person trying to beat out their opponent. Neither of them have to be correct, just better. It's not a metric for coming to truth, but a sport to be won.

I do not find debates to be particularly useful. Neither side is interested in understanding or seeking truth together. Both sides are convinced they're right, and are more trying to convince the audience how much better/smarter/wittier they are compared to their opponent. The use of underhanded tactics to try and "win" the debate, the logical fallacies, etc. all do the progress of a discussion a disservice.

The whole thing is a circus meant to entertain.

Truth seeking comes from in-depth discussions, in intimate settings. Not in front of audiences, not in comment sections.

Debates are all a part of the theatrics we find ourselves observing constantly. Rarely is it mutually in good-faith. Debates and the media are both simply meant to entertain first, and inform dead last. If you want the truth, find it yourself, take the socratic approach.

Speaking of Socrates, I think leaning into the socratic method is the antidote in this sort of climate. A mutual extension of good faith discussions and understanding.

When we try and engage in "debates" especially with public figures, it becomes less about having a discussion and about virality. Trying to see who gets the most clout. A pissing contest. I feel like conservatives are the worst at this, or were at least the pioneers in this. Debates become a clip fest of "Talking-Head DESTROYS Woke Feminist" or whatever stupid crap like that.

It's ultimately fruitless, and it sucks that debate culture has taken such a huge wave in our society. Everyone wants to be "right", but will refuse to admit when they're wrong and refuse to actually reflect.

Finding truth comes from open and honest dialogue, conversational journeys taken mutually of sorts, no tactics or tricks to one-up the other.

Stop engaging in these dumb bad-faith arguments. If you see someone in public trying to coax people into a debate, just avoid them like you would someone trying to solicit cheap t-shirts, they're worth about the same. Avoid pointless comment section wars. You don't owe them anything.
