Early Web Memories : Bear Blog Carnival October 2025

For the October 2025 Bear Blog Carnival, the topic hosted by my friend Winther is asking about our early web memories. So, here we go.

I got introduced to the web in the mid 2000s, a time where technology was prevalent, but people still touched grass. I remember going into my moms office to log onto her Dell optiplex running Windows XP and later Windows Vista.

I got introduced to the internet probably as early as 2003, seeing my mom and my aunt talking to each other in other rooms over Yahoo Messenger. I would laugh my little head off at the little reaction clips that came with the messenger, like a plank of wood that would say "Oh SNAP!" and break in half. I didn't really get to be on a computer much, since I saw it as an adult tool about as interesting as filing taxes.

That would change when I discovered you could play games on these things.

Like sometimes when I went with my dad to his work when he was a mechanic at a Chevrolet dealership, I would play Space Cadet 3D pinball on his work desktop in between doodling. This was probably the beginning of when I got into using the computer. I also discovered my favorite TV channels had websites as well as kids games from various snack brands.

The sites I frequented most were all kid-focused brand sites from mostly food companies oddly enough; all of them focusing on flash games. Nabiscoworld was a BIG one for me, anyone remember that one? Playing flash games themed after various snack products like a LifeSavers minigolf game. There was also Postopia, this one featured games themed around Fruity Pebbles, there was one called "Waffle Boy's Jungle Adventure" which I played quite a bit.

I frequented Nickelodeon, Playhouse Disney, and Disney Channel's websites as well for their flash games. There was one trick-or-treat game on Nickelodeon that scared the hell out of me as a kid.

Build-a-Bear was a site I went on a ton because every year for my birthday I would go to BaB with my mom. I have an extensive collection of stuffed animals from those that I plan on giving them all to my kids.

I got into FunBrain because of school, it was like the only game site that schools were chill with. Wasn't much of a coolmathgames kid.

There was also addictinggames.com, which I didn't get into until some years later. I spent endless hours playing beat 'em up games, Learn to Fly, or there was this one sniper-themed puzzle game that I played a lot too.

For the most part, I played a lot of flash games in my early internet days. Looking back on it, a lot of the games sucked, but they were fun for a kid.

Early YouTube was a big deal for me, following Halo machinimas for the most part. Halo 3 machinima of Weird Al's "Albuquerque", Dane Cook standup acted out in Halo 2.

It's kinda hard to pinpoint when the early internet days ended for me. A lot of it seemed to stay the same up until the 2010s, almost a full decade from when I first started on the internet in some cases.

I guess to sum it all up, my early internet days were filled with youtube and flash games made by big food conglomerates, which sounds weird, but was pretty normal in the 2000s.

If I could go back to that world, I would in a heartbeat, things were more fun and seemed to actually cater to kids. Which doesn't seem to really be the case anymore.
