Friendship Ended with iPod, Now Zune is my Best Friend

I bought a Zune, but not just any Zune, the Halo 3 edition Zune.

Halo 3 Zune

You might be asking yourself, "why?". You probably know by now that my favorite games are the original Bungie-era Halo games. Halo 3 of course being my favorite. And as my friend Suliman found out, I am huge into MP3 players, mostly iPods.

Now, if you're not sure what the hell a Zune even is, it's basically Microsoft's answer to the iPod. It failed horribly, mostly due to poor timing. It was a very competent gadget when it came out, but it launched shortly prior to the iPod Touch... the poor Zune never stood a chance.

Before I got my silver 3rd gen iPod Nano, my family had a Zune, the poop-brown one to be specific. I was like 7 and thought my parents were lame because the iPod was the hot item at the time. Of course had I known there was a Halo 3 iPod, I would have begged my parents until I lost my breath.

I got a really sick deal on this Zune too. It came from the original owner, was in excellent condition, but it was kinda expensive. $390 expensive. I reached out to the seller to hopefully cut a deal, and he offered me it for $320. The guy even threw in a neat XBOX 360 pen and lanyard.

What's funny is this is even the lesser-rare item, there's the brown/green Halo 3 version which was given to military, but the black/blue is more "Halo" in it's design. That and the brown just looks ugly as hell.

A neat thing about these Halo edition Zunes is they came pre-loaded with tons of Halo-related media. 100+ or so pictures including concept art, official artwork, and paintings. It also has some Red vs. Blue episodes, including an exclusive one to the Zune, various trailers for Halo 2 and 3, and Bungie ViDocs. It lastly came with the Halo 1, 2 vol 1, and 2 vol 2. Now the guy didn't have those pre-installed, so I found an archive that had them and threw them on. So, it's pretty close to how it operated when it launched for retail back in 2007.

You might be thinking that I'm crazy for spending $320 on an arguably inferior mp3 player to the iPod, and you would be correct. This isn't the only Halo electronic in my possession as I also have the transparent green Halo OG XBOX and the Halo 3 XBOX 360.

With how rare these editions are and how much people seem to want them in various Halo and Zune communities, I'm just glad I was able to get my hands on it. Hell it's kinda hard to get your hands on just a regular Zune for <$100.

This will probably my new daily driver next to my modded 5th Gen iPod. It'll be a fantastic companion to all my game nights!

as of writing this...

I've spent a couple nights alone. Mrs. Pirate and Mini Pirate went camping with my Father-in-Law since I had made plans for yesterday a few weeks ago. That plan was a Lord of the Rings marathon at a friend's house with some other guys from this local men's support group I'm a mod for. We watched the extended versions of course. So we got started watching at around 10:00am and got done at around 11:00pm. It was an absolute blast. I helped make some recipes from a Lord of the Rings cookbook, the famous Lembas bread as well as some bean stew. Both turned out great. I kinda fucked up on the Lembas bread because the recipe called to add some chilis and parmesan into the dough, so I had the idea to add some on the top and broil the top, and I think it turned out well. Anyway, just been working on adding music to my Halo 3 Zune and waiting for my girls to come home. I miss them.
