Absurd Pirate's Internet Blog

slaying the beast (aka my gaming backlog).

So, to my joy, I inherited some 35 PS2 games from my wife's cousin. Most of the games I've never even heard of, let alone played. This however brought up a question "how the fuck do I plan on tackling my backlog?".

I have a propensity for playing the same games in rotation: one of the Halo games, Stardew Valley, Minecraft, maybe the odd random game that I get a wild hair up my ass to play. I have a lot of games, but I tend to just play the same thing. I don't beat games often for this reason, my copy of Ocarina of Time still glares at me from my shelf knowing I haven't gotten past the forest temple.

It's not like I'm not enjoying the game, I just... stop playing for whatever reason. I want to beat them, so I'm devising a plan to do that.

so what am i going to do about it?

To try and get myself to have more variety. I've made a plan for what to do about it.

Each day I'm selecting a new game at random. I have to give that game a minimum of 3 hours of playtime before moving to a different game. If I don't enjoy that game in 3 hours, I stop playing and don't force myself to return. However, if I find I DO enjoy that game. That will be one of 2 games in rotation until I've beaten it.

This has worked out in the past, it's how I got around to beating Bulletstorm for the first time this year.

If I find myself getting bored with the game for whatever reason, I will pause it for a few days, but make the point to return to it before switching to a different game.

the goal.

The point isn't inherently to beat every game, because not every game is really worth more than a simple pick-up-and-play session. The point is to get more playtime out of the games I don't normally touch.

So starting out, I'm going to be playing the Oblivion Remaster this week in-between playing Halo game nights with my friends. It will for sure take me some time to beat it, hell I don't think you really can beat it. But I wanna get all the achievements for it like I did the XBOX 360 version.

With longer games like Oblivion, Cyberpunk 2077, etc. I will add it to my "wildcard" rotations; Where when I take a break from one game I'm trying to beat for a week, those are the games I fill it with.

Because I have ADHD and like novelty, I have added a "wildcard" day, where I pick up and play some game that I don't really care to beat, but might have fun just chilling and playing for a bit. This includes games like Super Mario 3/World/64, Champions of Norrath, Smackdown vs. Raw, etc.

To keep track of everything, I'm writing down everything in my journal. Logging what I've played, when I last played it. I might even start a gaming blog for reviewing games I've been playing and sharing them. Who knows, maybe you'll find a new favorite?

Anyway, I don't want gaming to be a chore, I want to keep it fun and engaging and try and force myself into some more variety to maybe find a new top 10. I don't care if I don't beat every game in my catalogue, so long as I gave it the ol' college try.
