i jailbroke a kindle (suck it bezos)

So, my friend Mono some time back shared a video about jailbreaking an amazon kindle in his personal discord channel. It got me interested in buying a kindle and then jailbreaking it.

Personally, I never wanted a kindle, or really any eReader for that matter for the longest time. I like they physicality of books. The tactile nature, the ability to annotate, the smell. You ever smell a brand new book? Fuck the new car smell, new book smell is where it's at. I've also never used anything with an e-ink display, so my frame of reference was trying to read on an iPad and that can get a little strenuous on the eyes after a while, so I largely avoided it.

When it comes to technology as well, I'm something of a control freak. It's why I use Linux primarily, and mod/jailbreak just about every device I have. I steered VERY clear from Kindles because of how locked-down they are. Then I watched the video Mono posted... and it piqued my interest.

I convinced myself to get a 10th generation paperwhite, decent sized screen, relatively new, and relatively cheap on amazon (about $50 including shipping). So I figured, "fuggit why not?"

It came in, I followed this guide. Thankfully it was running 5.13, so I got to do the Winterbreak guide.

A whole new world has opened up.

I like buying books, but I don't like buying EVERY book I read. I usually like to just go to the library, but the library can't have every book. It had Algospeak, but it didn't have No Longer Human, and it doesn't have the current book club book Careless People. I don't wanna buy a physical book if I'm not gonna like it.

So this solves my problem. I can save physical purchases for books I either know will be good, like No Longer Human, or it's a classic (i.e. Jane Austen's Emma).

I severely underestimated how nice it is to have a portable device that can store tons of books and make it easy to transfer ePub files.

I usually try to be pretty low-tech in a lot of aspects (outside of my computers). More so, I follow a rule of buying single-purpose devices, (i.e. devices that are good at one thing and stick to that one thing, like a digicam.. or a kindle).

It'll be great to download a PDF file of a textbook for school, keep it on my kindle, and then use it as needed. Or an ePub for a book for the book club. Or whatever!

Another benefit to jailbreaking is the customization. I installed KOReader and it is absolutely rock solid. Easily drag and drop file from my computer into the file system, I can set a custom background (I opted for reading statistics, but I can set it to custom wallpapers if I want to), etc.

It'll be nice too because then I can save a little bit of storage in my backpack. I'm also taking the train more often to work so I have roughly 6 hours per week to read.

Look out world, Pirate is literate and unchained from the binds of print!
